Proper 17, Year C "All of Us or None of Us at Jesus' Table"
Preached at St. Francis of Assisi in Montgomery, NY and St. Andrew's in Walden, NY. Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O LORD, my strength and my redeemer. Amen. Many of you know that my mother passed away from pancreatic cancer at the end of May this year. My father is not so easily adjusting to living life alone in the house that is not only my mother’s touch but also that of her mother, my grandmother, who moved in with them before she passed. Part of what my father is struggling with is trying to live in the shadow of how my mother had kept the house. Every object contains memories and stories of her, and he is fighting to keep it just as she had it so he can keep her alive. Recently he had guests and he was a little lost as to what to do. The guests were friends of my brother and they all planned on having a fancy clambake with drawn butter. My brother didn’t want my father to put out the good lace tablecloth that my gra
